Customer Focus: Jade Bowmer

It's been a while since we had a chat with one of our customers, so we got in touch with local artist, Jade Bowmer. Jade skilfully uses our Water Clear Epoxy resin to create her marine-inspired masterpieces.

Jade Bowmer, with her piece, 'Adaption'

In Jade's own words, "having grown up living in Cornwall, the sea has always been important to me and has hugely influenced my practice, I think perhaps that’s why I am so interested in water and also why I choose to work with resin. In my work I aim to capture those moments of fluidity and

This Month in Fibreglass: April 2016

Keep up to date with This Month in Fibreglass! On the cutting edge of resin squirters, ball chairs and fibreglass seafood.

 Top Spinner

The insect world is well in fashion at the moment with the likes of butterfly wing buildings, drones that swarm and foot-long insects capable of communicating wirelessly and performing group tasks that crawl all over a picnic and put you off your sandwiches. Proper scary stuff.
Well here is a new thing, and I think it's one step closer to my own personal Spiderman web spinner.

No Mr Bond, I expect you to die....
Obviously a bit big to strap to my arm and just a bit slow at 10mm a second, the 3D cocooner by Festo is "a vertically arranged tripod and robotic spinneret (the organ through which spiders, silkworms, and caterpillars produce and spin their thread), the 3D Cocooner’s fiberglass resin is hardened in mid-air via an attached UV-curing light." Obviously you should keep it in the bath when not in use.

This Month in Fibreglass: March 2016

A bit of everything from the World's Wide Webs this month. Be amazed at one mans dream of flight; look at a selection of fancy walls, and finally wonder where you will put the moulds for this massive space ship, before building a fleet of them and taking over the universe. YES? Oh... just me then.

Check Out My Chopper

Auditions for the new Airwolf were disappointing
Dreams: we all have them. Winning the lottery perhaps? Becoming a worldwide super-famous rock star with millions of fans? Or maybe, you just want to move to Mexico, dress in spandex, a mask and wrestle for small change. Well, you might never get to see me in South America so you'll have to admire the balls of this man instead. His name is Felix Kambwiri and he is my Hero of the Month (a new award).

Actually, I like this guy. Go to your shed now and build!
As you've probably guessed, our gutsy Malawian has dared to dream and, unlike many of us, his dream sits in his shed, made with his own two hands from some fibreglass (of course), some junk and a motorcycle engine.

This Month in Fibreglass: August 2015

This summer, step-thru to see sentient scooters, spectacular slates and a surprised sheep. Mmm... sexy.

Automatic Love

2 strokes and she's anybody's
If, like me, you've spent many a night worrying what would happen if technology began to think, it may be best to avoid Patricia Piccinini's vision of the future. Can we live in a world where our scooters keep wandering off to snuggle up to anything with two wheels? No we can't. I don't care how cute they are.
The website on which I saw these godless creatures says....

This Month In Fibreglass: July 2015

Artists: they do like a bit of the fibreglass for their creations, so we have put together our (cleanish) tribute to the artist who probably uses GRP to create some of the wackiest forms ever. This month: Atelier Van Lieshout and his fibreglass buildings - or 'walk-in sculptures'. Maybe he has inspired me to take some resin home, maybe not.

Meet the Flintstones

Blow down one end and it plays a tune
Starting with something almost normal is this "Original Dwelling", unveiled last month at last months Design Miami/Basel fair. It's primitive, made to make you think of cave dwellers, but it's a vision of the future as well - a future where we live in tribes and are all hippies. Kill. Me. Now.

This Month in Fibreglass: June 2015

This month is so eclectic even I can't think of a connection.

Half Baked

Say cheese
This is the "Roadcut" art exhibit by Mike Womack currently being displayed at Thelma Sadoff Center for the Arts in Fond du La, somewhere in the US of A. A towering monolith of tasty cheese snacks stuck together with epoxy. Except sometime during the night.....

This Month In Fibreglass: January 2015

Welcome to 2015! Can you believe it? Neither can we.

And to truly ring in the new year in style, what better than a random selection of news stories from across the globe - all with a tenuous link to fibreglass? Nothing! Here goes...

Northern Nudes

She's being restored... but she really ain't happy about it

The town of Doncaster is buzzing this month, amidst news that a beloved sculpture is to be restored to its former glory.
The giant fibreglass artwork, The Lovers, sparked much clutching of pearls when it was first unveiled in 1968. It was originally installed in the fountain of the then Arndale Centre, and proved to become a beloved fixture over the years. It seemingly disappeared in the mid-1980s during the centre's rebranding as the Frenchdale Centre.

But! In 2006, it came to light that The Lovers had been canoodling at the bottom of someone's garden for some 20+ years. There was even a Facebook group set up in its honour.

This Month in Fibreglass: June 2014

Please send any complaints about this month's blog's terrible titles to the email address on this page.
I have no regrets, none.

The Tracks of Might, Here's

Colonel Sims has had to postpone the revolution , the factory door is too small.
One of the many great things about working at CFS is that we get to see an ecletic mix of customer projects. None more extreme than this: Jamie Sims' 15ft light tank. I think he may be considering annexing parts of Leicestershire. If you live there, it's time to bow to your new leader.

Customer Focus: Names In Lights

For the very first Customer Focus, we spoke to Names In Lights. Based in Wirral, they make custom decorative lights – mainly in the shape of words, although they have been known to dabble in something a little different. The lights are made using our clear cast resin, strengthening and UV additives, and occasionally our gelcoats and topcoats on bespoke projects.

We spoke to Jill Bonner, one of the partners there, about how they came to create their lights and how they do it.

Life Casting with Grotesque FX Studio

Just in time for Halloween, we went down to see Steve Hollins at the spooky Grotesque FX Studio in Camborne, and watched him work his magic on Alex, our very own Technical Advisor. Alex wanted a mould of his head taken, and Steve is just the man for the job.

Steve's workshop appears very unassuming as you approach, but when you open the door you're greeted by a sea of disembodied heads, hands and feet, as well as some creatures that have never been seen before...

The whole process of life casting is very involved, and Alex went through various stages - from bald cap, right through to mummification!
