Japanese Lifeboats in Development

The Shikoku Region Transport Bureau in Japan has unveiled plans to create fibreglass lifeboats for use in the event of a Tsunami.

The lifeboats will be placed alongside public buildings, and will be designed to rise with the water level, allowing between 20 and 50 passengers to stay afloat. The boats will be about 5 metres in length, and have a toilet on board, allowing passengers to stay aboard for several days while awaiting assistance.

A prototype boat is expected to be released later this year.
